Application- Trans 9
Sep. 9th, 2011 10:28 pmCharacter's name: Alanna of Pirate's Swoop and Olau, also known as the Lioness.
Character's LJ: http://lionesschampion.livejournal.com/
Character's canon: Song of the Lioness
Brief (around 300 words) personality outline of your character: She is brave, tough, extremely loyal, and she can be very stubborn/determined. Alanna can be very short-tempered and she has a sharp tongue when riled. She also doesn't like to be idle and, even when she finds herself with little to do, she'll usually go find something that needs doing and do it herself. There is some tension earlier in the books where Alanna has issues accepting her own gender, thinking it a hindrance to her ultimate goal, but in later books she learns that it isn't at all and, by the time I'll be taking her from, she's mostly accepted who she is, although she can still be awkward in social situations given how long she lived as the opposite gender. Alanna also had issues with the use of her gift early on, fearing her own abilities, but after her experiences both with the Sweating Sickness and later her time as shaman for the Bazhir tribe that adopted her, the Bloody Hawk, she comes to accept that part of herself as well.
More info:
Likes- Alanna enjoys most physical activities with the exception of things like wrestling, which she isn't much good at due to her small stature. In particular though, she enjoys riding (and she loves her mare Moonlight and later her horse Darkmoon) and fencing (friendly duels using her sword instead of actual combat). She likes to be busy and, if left without something to do, she'll go searching to make herself useful (As an example, in the second book, she gets laid up due to an injury she took in a battle during the war they were fighting and she ends up going to help the healers and the blacksmiths when the healers turn her away for being in no shape to do magic.). She also likes "pretty things" and, in the fourth book, is very excited about getting her ears pierced so that she can wear earrings. Alanna is proud of being a knight and loves her kingdom. Alanna enjoys testing her limits and abilities.
Dislikes/Fears- Alanna is frightened of the idea of being helpless, but in particular being helpless against death. And this reaches extremes when it comes to people that she loves (Example, the Ordeal of Knighthood forces a knight to face his/her fears and one of hers was the fear that Roger, who she strongly suspected meant her prince, who was also her friend and lover at the time, ill and facing the possibility that Roger might succeed and that her prince might die is the last challenge that she's forced to face. When George, also a love interest and friend, gets shot with an arrow in that same book and ends up looking very ill, she is terrified that he'll die.) But, being helpless in general is also something that frustrates her. She frightened of the possibility of drowning based on a past childhood experience and she really hates the cold so much that she tends to pile on the layers whenever the possibility of being cold comes up. She has a fear of spiders too. Alanna is not a fan of social gatherings, often feeling awkward and out of place. Court games and anything she considers needless procedure is not looked upon kindly.
Goals: As a child, she states wanting to learn to be a knight and do great deeds. This continues on as she gets older, but is also modified when she comes to realize that there is more to being a knight. She wants to protect those that she loves and others who need protecting as well as generally being helpful. She also wants to travel and see the world. Alanna might love her home, but she also enjoys exploring and learning more about the world she lives in based on first hand experience.
Extra stuff that might be helpful: She tends to be blunt and straightforward, disliking lies. This doesn't mean that she can't/won't lie because she will if she thinks that the situation calls for it. Alanna lived through her years as a page and squire as a boy so that she could earn her shield and while she hated lying about it, that didn't stop her from keeping her secret. If she thinks it's necessary, then she'll lie, but, in an ideal situation, she would prefer not to do so. She's also more then capable of keeping a secret if she feels that she has to.
Brief (around 500 words) history and background of your character OR link to a really good wiki page with their history. In either case, explain where they cut off from the timeline: I'm attaching a link for this as I thought that it was laid out best there, but if you'd rather a written summary then let me know and I'll write it. She'll be coming from a little after the ending of Lioness Rampant, soon after she and George are married.

If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are and outline EXACTLY how they function, as their powers may not work due to the nature of the ship or may need to be limited somehow: Alanna has the ability to use the Gift, which is one source of magic within her world. More information on the Gift can be found at this (http://tamorapierce.wikia.com/wiki/The_Gift) wiki link. The color of her Gift is purple and her Gift for healing is particularly strong. She also wears an amulet around her neck gifted to her by the Great Mother Goddess, Alanna's patron, which allows her to see magic being used. During the main story, she used an old magic sword that she named Lightening, but by the time I'd be taking her from, she's no longer using it by that time in canon for plot related reasons.
Non-superhuman special abilities of note (Is your character a master ventriloquist? A naturally-occurring super-genius? The best martial artist in the world? Say so here): Alanna is an excellent fighter, able to use her weapons equally well with either hand. She's better while armed as that's where most of her training came in and she can use a fair number of weapons although she prefers her sword (She's especially skilled with one), but she's also learned some Shang fighting techniques from the Shang Dragon Liam Ironarm and some street fighting (both hand-to-hand and knife) from George Cooper.
